Vernon's Goodbye: A Journey of Faith and Hope

  • ABOUT THIS SERIES As medical advances keep people alive longer, a movement is growing to improve care at the end of life. Many Americans want to die at home, not in a hospital. Vernon Nantz was one of them. Hoping that others might benefit from his experience, Vernon agreed to a request by Observer reporter Karen Garloch and photographer Jeff Siner to spend time with him and his family during the last months of his life. Garloch and Siner spent four months on the project. These articles are based on personal observations as well as interviews with Vernon, his wife, JoAnn, their family members and friends, his doctors, hospice nurses and social worker. Reach Garloch at 358-5078 or send e-mail to kgarloch@charlotteobserver.com
